1961 Yuri Gargarin (USSR) is first
man in space. J. F. Kennedy
elected US President.
Monty Storey of BPS elected President of YPU.
BPS win YPU Keighley Trophy pictorial prints.
BPS rejoins the Inter-Club Colour Slide Group.
1962 Smallpox outbreak in Britain.
Marilyn Monroe (36) dies US.
BPS win YPU Keighley Trophy pictorial prints.
BPS win YPU Award for Record Prints.
1963 John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, U.S.A
1964 BBC-2 TV starts in UK. John Murray donates Murray Trophy to BPS.
1965 Sir Winston Churchill dies. BPS membership all time high of 219.
1966 England win FA World Cup. BPS win YPU Jordan Colour Trophy.
1967 Colour TV starts on BBC 2.
RC Metropolitan Cathedral is
opened in Liverpool.
BPS was one of only four clubs in YPU with over
100 members. Norfolk Trophy donated by Douglas
Galey. Members visit London Salon and Royal PS.
1968 M Luther King assassinated.
Richard M Nixon is US Pres.
BPS hosts "A Colour Spectacular" slide show in the
Victoria Hall, Saltaire.
1969 Opening of Victoria Line tube.
QE2 maiden voyage. Colour
TV starts on BBC1 and ITV.
US land first men on Moon.
BPS host YPU 70th Print Exhibition in Central
Library & Slides in Library Theatre. John Radford is
President. Move from Unity Hall to larger meeting
room in Eastbrook Hall.
1970 US Apollo 13 rescue mission. Monty Storey donates Silver Salver to BPS.
1971 Decimal Day (15/2) in Britain. Colin Sutton introduces Audio Visual to BPS.
1974 Miners strike - Edward Heath
resigns. Flixborough Nypro
chemical works disaster.
US Pres. Nixon resigns due
to Watergate scandal.
Audio Visual group formed by Colin Sutton and
quickly becomes fastest growing group within the
Society. Traditionalists object strongly claiming it is
not photography! Instructional evenings set up away
from BPS to foster further interest.
1975 Margaret Thatcher replaces
Edward Heath as leader of the
Conservative party.
First joint Russian-American
space mission.
Re-opening of the Suez Canal.
Cod war with Iceland.
BPS joint winners with Leeds CC in YPU Keighley
Pictorial Print competition. Charles Mitchell and
Colin Sutton each present Audio Visual lectures at
Victoria Hall, Saltaire to public. BPS A/V Trophy
Competition is established.
BPS & Yorkshire Region of Royal PS hold Audio
Visual Workshop
in concert hall of Eastbrook Hall.
Guest speakers: Sir George Pollock Bt. FRPS. with
Lady Doreen Pollock FRPS; Ray Brightman FRPS;
Colin Sutton & Charles V. Mitchell of the BPS.
1977 Qu. Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee.
Charlie Chaplin (88) dies.
Charles Mitchell is one of the first to gain FRPS in
Audio Visual presentation.
1980 British explorers reach S. Pole.
John Lennon shot dead in N.Y.
BPS hold special Dinner at Victoria Hotel with
High Sherrif of Yorkshire as guest speaker.
1983 Breakfast TV starts in Britain.
Philips launch Compact Disc.
National Museum of Photography, Film &
Television and Imax Cinema open in Bradford.
1984 Miners strike against Thatcher. NMPFT host exhibition of the Keighley Prints.
1988 Lockerbie air disaster - blamed
on Lybian terrorists.
NMPFT purchase the Keighley Prints from the
Yorkshire Photographic Union for 5000 UKP.
1990 PM Margaret Thatcher resigns.
John Major is new PM.
BPS win the Inter-Club competition.
1992 Civil war breaks up Yugoslavia. BPS win the Inter-Club competition.
1994 C of E ordain women priests. BPS hold Open Evening at Trinity Church Hall.
1995 O.J. Simpson trial is televised
worldwide - he is acquitted.
P & O liner Oriana launched.
YPU Annual Assembly in Great Hall of Bradford
University. Print Exhibition in Bradford Cathedral.
Move to new room at Bolton Conservative Club.
1996 US Pres. Clinton re-elected.
Olympics in Atlanta USA.
Colin Sutton first to introduce digital printing and
computer manipulation to the BPS.
1997 Diana, Princess of Wales dies in Paris car crash.
1998 Year of Photography and the
Electronic Image.
Pres. Clinton impeached in US.
Albanians independence fight
in Kosovo. Frank Sinatra dies.
Titanic is big UK cinema hit.
Colin Sutton presented with YPU Certificate for 25
years service to Photography in Yorkshire by the
Sheriff of York at the YPU Assembly.
Colin Sutton is only BPS member to have images
published as part of the Year of Photography.
BPS ban digital images from club competitions.
1999 BBC, ONdigital & Sky TV
each launch digital TV in UK.
Russian Pres. Yeltsin resigns.
Pres. Clinton acquitted in USA
impeachment trial related to
Monica Lewinsky scandal.
N. Ireland granted home rule.
NMPFT re-opens after major refurbishment.
BPS hosts month long Print & Slide Exhibition to
celebrate YPU Century of Photography at Design
Exchange concurrent with a combined Exhibition
of Prints by BPS and Camera Club members.
BPS now on-line with internet email and website.
BPS now accept digital images in competitions.
2000 V. Putin elected Russian Pres.
Concorde crash near Paris.
Queen Elizabeth, the Queen
Mother celebrates 100 years.
Massive flooding in UK.
BPS enters into the "24/7" internet era
with new website and digital image Gallery. Soon
becomes one of the largest UK photo club websites.
BPS members digital images also accepted for
display in the new YPU website Gallery.
2001 Terrorist attacks on Pentagon
and WTC New York.
This BPS Timeline first published on Internet.
2002 War on Terror continues.
Queen's Golden Jubilee.
BPS supports the City of Bradford bid for
the European Capital of Culture 2008.
2003 War on Terror continues.
USA/UK in Iraq conflict.
BPS wins 2002/03 Interclub Trophy Competition.
Significant increase in membership.
