1839 Daguerrotype process intro-
duced by Louis Daguerre and
Nicéphore Niepce.
 
1840 Wm. Fox Talbot patented his
new Calotype process.
 
1851 F. Scott-Archer introduced the
Collodion Wet Plate process.
Wealthy local businessmen now experiment with
this "new fangled" science.
1853 London Photographic Society
formed - later to be Royal P.S.
 
1860 Garibaldi liberates Italy and
proclaims Victor Emmanuel as
King of a united Italy.
A Bradford Photographic Club formed with
John V. Godwin as the first President.
Early meetings held at St George's Hall.
1874 Disraeli succeeds Gladstone
as GB Prime Minister.
Club name changed to the West Riding of
Yorkshire Photographic Society.
1884 Lord Wolseley rescues General
Gordon from Khartoum.
Name changed again to Bradford Amateur
Photographic Society.
1885 Khartoum is captured and
Gordon slain.
Adoption of the present title: Bradford
Photographic Society - aka BPS.
1895 Röntgen discovers X-rays.
Marconi invents the wireless.
Alexander Keighley, Percy Lund & Ezra Clough
now dominate the Bradford PS scene.
1896 Jameson raiders defeated by the
Boers. Gold discovered in
the Klondike, US.
Bradford PS hosts the first public presentation of
Henry Hibbert's new Cinematograph machine
also made in Bradford.
1898 Radium is discovered by Marie
& Pierre Curie - France.
Death of Gladstone.
BPS holds a successful and historic Pictorial
Photographic Exhibition in the old Bradford
Municipal Art Gallery.
1899 Boer War begins in SA.
Marconi wireless telegraphy
experiments. Valdemar Poulsen
invents tape recorder.
BPS luminaries Keighley, Lund & Clough form
the Yorkshire Photographic Union - aka YPU.
Inaugural meeting held in BPS Meeting Room.
17 more Societies join YPU by the year end.
1900 Ladysmith and Mafeking are
relieved. Labour Party formed.
Bradford hosts the first AGM of theYorkshire
Photographic Union (YPU)
1901 Queen Victoria died aged 82.
Trans-Siberian railway opened.
Bradford hosts the 2nd YPU AGM at the old
Bradford Grammar School.
1902 Coronation of Edward VII.
Boer War come to an end.
Bradford hosts the 3rd YPU AGM again at the
old Bradford Grammar School.
1905 Theory of Relativity - Einstein.
St Petersburg massacre.
Bradford hosts the 6th YPU AGM at the old
Bradford Grammar School.
1911 Coronation of King George V.
Amundson reaches South Pole.
Bradford hosts the 12th YPU AGM at the
Beanstalk Café.
1914 - 1918 World War I - BPS Meetings continue throughout the War.
1919 First Atlantic flight by Alcock
& Brown. German fleet were
scuttled at Scapa Flow.
Bradford hosts the 20th YPU AGM at the
Mechanics Institute. BPS Print Exhibition held
in Cartwright Hall.
1927 Lindbergh flies Atlantic alone.
Canberra is the new capital of
Australian Commonwealth.
Bradford hosts the YPU Annual Conference at
the Mechanics Institute. A tea is held at the
nearby Collinson's Café.
1928 Jacob Schick invents electric
shaver. First German Airship
crosses the Atlantic.
Bradford hosts the first YPU Yorkshire Salon at
the Cartwright Hall. BPS win YPU Challenge
Trophy for Prints.
1929 Wall Street crash - US slump. BPS win YPU Trophy Competition.
1932 Sydney Harbour Bridge opened Several members break away to form rival club.
1934 Adolf Hitler becomes Dictator. BPS win YPU Challenge Shield for slides.
1936 King George V died.
Edward VIII abdicates.
Spanish Civil War.
Bradford hosts YPU Annual Conference and
Exhibition at the College of Arts & Crafts.
BPS win YPU Challenge Shield for slides.
1939 Outbreak of World War II BPS continues meeting throughout the War.
1940 Battle of Britain raged. BPS win YPU Keighley Pictorial Print Trophy.
1941 Japan attack on Pearl Harbour.
US now involved in the war.
BPS win YPU Keighley Trophy again and the
YPU Challenge Cup.
1942 Battle of El Alamein, Egypt. BPS win YPU Keighley Trophy.
1943 German V-2 rockets launched
in air raids over S. England.
Germany loses Battle of
Stalingrad, Russia.
BPS win YPU Challenge Shield. BPS now tops
list of YPU clubs for most trophies won.
Bradford hosted Exhibition of Alex Keighley
prints at Cartwright Hall.
1944 Allies fight on Reich territory. BPS win YPU Challenge Shield for slides.
1945 US drop Atomic bombs on
Japan. End of World War II.
BPS win YPU Challenge Trophy for Prints.
1946 First electronic computer in US BPS win YPU Challenge Shield for slides.
1947 Edwin Land invents Polaroid
camera in US.
BPS win the YPU Crowther-Cox Trophy for
record slides.
1948 Bread rationing ends in the UK.
Ghandi assassinated in Delhi.
Truman elected US President.
XIV Olympiad at Wembley.
BPS wins YPU Pictorial Section.
Bradford hosts 4th Yorkshire Salon, renamed
"Jubilee Salon" commemorating forthcoming
50 years of YPU. Held at City Art Gallery.
1949 Clothes rationing ends in GB. BPS win a YPU award.
1953 Coronation of Elizabeth II. Bradford celebrates the event in style. 
1956 British troops leave Suez, Egypt.
Eisenhower re-elected US Pres.
Bradford hosts 4th Yorkshire Salon at the
Cartwright Hall in Lister Park.
1960 End of British rule in Cyprus. Bradford PS celebrates its Centenary.
