Five Rise Locks, Bingley

Five Rise Locks by Janis Beecroft

This stretch of the Leeds-Liverpool canal was first navigated in 1774 thanks to the
three and five rise locks on the waterway at Bingley.

A masterpiece of design engineered by Longbottom, constructed by local masons and
is regarded as a miracle of 18th century engineering. Built in 1773, this five-rise
staircase is 60 feet high and is still in regular use today.
